Le Thouarsais

Thouars

Enjoying its central location, the town of Thouars offers the peaceful, lively living environment of a town on a human scale. The Thouars train station, which has been converted into a multimodal hub to facilitate your travel to all the national metropolises, provides fast, seamless connections to cities such as Saumur, Tours, Angers and La Roche-sur-Yon .

The town is now recognized as a “Ville d’art et d’histoire“, which enables it to organize tours and events around its rich heritage such as the Château des Ducs de la Trémoïlle. The commune is also the only one in the department to have obtained 4 flowersat the “Villes et villages fleuris” label, which is recognition of the innovative work of municipal gardeners and the quality of the living environment offered by the town.

In downtown Thouars, the art center La Chapelle Jeanne d’Arc is a benchmark venue for contemporary art in the Greater West of France, and has been labeled a “contemporary art center of national interest” in 2019 by the Ministry of Culture.

The reputation of Thouars also shines through its markets: the town hosts two markets a week from 8am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, in Place Lavault.

Sports enthusiasts are not left out: a small environmental jewel, the Thouet valley comes to satisfy fishing and water sports enthusiasts in addition to the many quality facilities available to the population ( swimming pool, stadiums, tennis courts, ..).

The Loire Valley

Fontevraud Abbey

Europe’s largest royal abbey

Enclosed in 13 hectares of calm, well-being and lush, generous nature, it was founded in 1101 by an iconoclastic, visionary preacher: Robert d’Abrissel. Considered an “ideal” city, a place of exaltation of the faith, dedicated to prayer, work, abstinence, silence and poverty.

1189: Fontevraud becomes a royal necropolis, housing the graves of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart.
